Yes, a few days ago was the official start of Spring. And? Where I live it’s still in the 30s. Just between you and me, I think it’s going to snow more. So with winter still in full force, how can we start wearing our warmer weather clothes, and especially the new trends we can’t wait anymore to wear? Great question.

First the bad news, no matter how much I want to, sandals are still not an option. I try to start wearing my sandals as early as possible and wear them until it’s way past time to put them away. If you live in a hot climate, you probably don’t understand why it’s such a big deal but those of you that live in a colder climate like me do. You know we only have about 4 months to wear sandals comfortably and since we love the feel of warm air on our feet, we try to extend the season as long as possible.

The secret for our colder climate is wearing layers. Obviously you can’t wear just a pretty sheer printed top like we do when it’s in the 80s, but we can pair it with a knit top (cami, tank or silk t-shirt) underneath and a cardigan or jacket on top. The jacket shown is a modern take on a power suit jacket which is another spring trend. This way you can wear a 2013 spring trend when there is still snow on the ground.

Classiques Entier Leather Jacket, Silk Top & Tweed Skirt

This is a perfect example of a trendy spring outfit that you can wear now. Leather is a huge spring trend that is perfect for colder weather, especially in a bright, fun color. It does have 3/4 length sleeves so if you’re always cold, add a long sleeve blouse or top underneath. The skirt is tweed which is a heavier fabric so it will keep your legs warm. Add some tights and pumps or boots, and you’re set. Looking great, yet comfortably warm.

Ah yes, pieces that can be worn now and for the whole summer. The animal print top is short sleeve so it’s perfect for wearing a layer over it such as this cotton army jacket. The jacket has long sleeves so is a good item for warmth now, but since it’s cotton, it can be warm in much warmer weather as well. Of course you can also wear it into fall, so you get 3 seasons of wear from it. These pants are coated, which gives the sheen to them. It takes chinos to another level. The ones shown are short, almost capri length, so if you are 5’8 or less, I suggest you choose a pair of regular length pants because the shorter length cuts your legs off. This creates a stubby look and most of us want our legs to look long and lean.

So how do you start wearing your new spring clothing now when it’s still cold? The secret is layers. Use the looks above as ideas on how to get the most wear out of, and the highest ROI (return on investment) from your spring wardrobe.

Spring Fashions and Trends

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

What are some fashion items you just can’t live without this spring? Do you wonder if you’re really wearing what’s in style or if you’re being left out? Here are some items to guide you in being as trendy as you want to be.

Bright florals are big this season and what could be better than this dress that has floral on the top and a butt minimizing bottom? It’s every girl’s dream. Add a fun scarf as a head covering and you’re ready for any weather including sprinkles. Some of us will go to almost any length to make sure our hair stays dry.

Continuing with the floral trend is this great floral jacket. In average and plus sizes, it’s a great fit for almost anyone. Once again, the floral is only on your top half so you can wear any color you like on the bottom. Dark colors will minimize, bright colors will be much fun! Add some capri pants and you’re ready for even the hottest day. Strappy sandals complete the look with flair.

The opposite of top is bottom (how clever) which is exactly what this dress is from the florals. The black is on the top and the geometric swirls are on the bottom. The full skirt is great on most body types and makes you want to do a twirl like you did when you were a child. The large necklace goes perfect with a simple top.

Want to be cool and look great? Try this adorable eyelet tunic and white shorts. Make sure you can’t see through them though. There’s nothing worse than an extremely cute outfit that everyone can see straight through. Check out the mustard yellow shoes. Don’t they look comfy?

What’s cuter and easier than a wrap dress? It takes about 45 seconds to throw on and you look totally put together and cool as a cucumber. The neutral color shown here can be worn with any color of accessories. She has a green chunky necklace and bag which is a great contrast. This dress is appropriate for work in many instances.

Have fun using these trends to guide you into the hottest Spring fashionista you want to be.

Last Saturday I attended Boston Store’s semi-annual fashion show called trendevous (trend a vou) that Jordan Chambers narrated (and did a great job). The 2010 spring trends are:

Beaded Tops

Beaded tops-the more embellishments the better. I love the wild, geometric design embellished with different colored beads. The scarf adds even more interest although some people may find it too much. Be sure you wear a neutral bottom with a shirt like this or it will be too much. The white capris she’s wearing are perfect with this. Chaudry tunic in fuschia

Men & Details

For men, details such as buttons, snaps and other embellishments are big this season. This jacket with the big pockets and snaps can be worn to many casual events. The scarf adds a bit of sophistication and the olive pants give the outfit some extra color. Nautica Jeans utility jacket

 Denim & Neutrals

Denim paired with neutrals is another spring trend. A neutral color, such as tan, is great to pair with demin and really makes the denim pop. Remember, you only want to wear one denim item at a time. No jeans with a denim jacket and a denim shirt. Too much!

Another spring trend that continues from previous seasons, and in my opinion will probably become a classic, is the neutral shoe. This makes your legs look longer and slimmer. Try it, you’ll like it!  Jessica Simpson belted dress in denim

Daytime Dress in Floral

Another beautiful spring trend is a daytime dress. This one is in a bright floral which is also a trend. I think this dress is exquisite and so lady like. It’s wonderful for all of your spring and summer social events. Jessica Simpson dress in floral multi

White Shirt

Yet another trend, which really isn’t a trend at all but a very classic garment is the white shirt. The white shirt has been around for many years and is a classic for both men and women. Here it’s paired with pencil skirt which is another classic. Whenever you don’t know what to wear, put these two together and you’re guaranteed to look polished.  Jones New York Signature knotted front-tie shirt in white; Lauren by Ralph Lauren belted skirt in black

 Trench Coat

Trench coats are a classic that are trendy this spring. Trench coats were made popular by the military many years ago and have stayed an essential in wardrobes around the world since then. Since your trench is a staple and you will wear it many times and can have it for many years, invest in a quality one. Statement Necklace

The last spring trend is the statement necklace. The statement necklace has been around for a couple of seasons now but it’s so popular it continues to show up in new styles.  The one shown uses faux pearls and is a bib necklace due to its bib structure.  Erica Lyons faux-pearl bib necklace

Enjoy the great trends of this new season! I’m happy to answer all questions you may have about them.
