Clinton Kelly Visits Macy’s Southridge

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Last Saturday Clinton Kelly, best known as co-host on What Not To Wear (1 of my favorite shows), visited the grand opening of Macy’s at Southridge. When I heard he was visiting I was excited because I have a lot of respect for him.

My husband (since Clinton’s a guy he agreed to go) and I got there over an hour early and I got in line to get a good seat. Since my husband hadn’t seen the new Macy’s yet, he went shopping while I waited. I got a great seat in the second row, on the aisle next to the runway. Perfect! BTW, Clinton and my husband had on similar outfits-colorful button down shirt, dark-wash jeans, cute shoes and a nice jacket. For the record, my husband looks great every time we leave the house, and he makes that decision on his own.

Clinton came out after being introduced and was his usual friendly, attractive self. He had no pretense or snobbiness (huge plus in my book). After a brief chat about his current life and accomplishments, he asked for someone to come up on stage for analysis. A middle age lady in a bright green hoodie with large writing on it came up (I have a picture but won’t include it to spare her the embarrassment). He told her the hoodie was way too young for her, her dark wash jeans were fine but her hiking boots were…for hiking, not for everyday life. Dress your age.

The next lady came up with a wrinkled blue t-shirt and jeans. She gave her reasoning for wearing this “outfit” and Clinton told her it wasn’t an outfit. It was just a t-shirt and jeans. An outfit is a whole look which includes a top, bottom, possibly a jacket or cardigan, jewelry or scarf, shoes and a purse. Yep, that’s the cold hard truth.

Clinton started talking about spring looks and the fashion show began. Bright colors, color blocking and mixed prints are all trendy this spring. Clinton talked about not being afraid of color and mixing it up. As long as the colors go together (they don’t need to match perfectly), you can wear them together. Clinton also said that dresses are on trend this summer so don’t be afraid to find the perfect one for your body type.

As I was listening to Clinton give valuable style advice, it occurred to me that much of the information he was giving is exactly the same things I tell my clients. That made me feel good and I realized that you don’t need to be famous, to be an expert at what you do. You just need to put in many, many hours of hard work perfecting your craft and staying current or even ahead of the trends so you can give your clients the best experience possible.

Granny Dresses-Just Don’t Do It

Friday, August 26th, 2011

I recently started working with a client who is a vibrant, fun-loving woman. She’s extremely smart and well educated. She knows what she likes and goes after it. However, all of these wonderful attributes don’t always equal an impeccable style IQ.

I was at her house for the first time and after spending a couple of hours with her, noticed what looked like (and I hoped) was a quilt. It was folded over a pile of other things so I couldn’t see exactly what it was. I hesitated and then asked the dreaded question “what is that laying over there; is it a quilt?”  She laughed (oh, oh) and brought it over for me to see. It was, for lack of a better term, a granny dress, not a quilt. She told me how she had come to own it and how she wore it. I sucked in my breath and tried not to say what was on my mind. I failed. I rolled my eyes and asked why such a lovely, vibrant woman would want to wear something like that. My patient client replied that she thought it was cute.

Ladies, if you want to drive away opportunities, including with men, please continue to wear garments like this. If you want people to take you seriously (whether business or personal) and have a vibrant relationship with your significant other (or want to find someone if you aren’t currently taken), run, don’t walk, and throw this in the trash. Usually I’d say to recycle it but with this type of item, unless you want to use it as a dust cloth, please just toss it out.

Thankfully my client gave me the dress, which made me very happy. Her husband was also quite happy it was gone. After taking pictures of it for you to enjoy, it has gone on to greener pastures.

Men: International Dressing

Friday, August 19th, 2011

There is a misconception that when conducting international business, you can dress casually because other countries dress just as, or even more casually than the USA.

This is untrue, with much of the world, including countries with very high temperatures, dressing much more professional than most Americans. Males in many countries routinely wear suits which show their level of position and serious attitude towards business.

Color is another important consideration when dressing internationally. In the US, white means pure, clean and honest. In other countries, it is known as death and for funerals. Purple is another color that in the US means royalty or affluence and in other countries means mourning. Blue, in some countries is also an indication of death, where in the US, it represents loyalty, honesty and hard work.

Research the countries (or call me) you will be doing business with to ensure you project the correct image and feeling.  If you don’t you could lose a business opportunity.

How to Save Money While Packing for a Trip

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Going on a trip this summer or fall? If you’re driving, space may not be an issue but if you’re flying, you need to make the most of every square inch of your carry on suitcase so you don’t have to pay extra fees.

To save as much room as possible, wear your thickest, largest layers on the plane. You’ll be happy to have the added warmth.

Determine a color scheme for your clothes-1 or 2 neutrals depending on the length of your trip. Then pick a couple of colors in your color palette to add punch to your outfits. This will make creating outfits easy and take up less suitcase space since you won’t have needless garments.

Instead of folding your clothes, roll them. It will make them smaller than folding and you’ll be able to get more in. stuff the toes of your shoes with socks or small toiletries.

Use zip lock bags for everything that’s wet (such as toiletries). You may even want to double bag them. Better safe than wet, messy, dirty suitcase contents.

Make sure your toiletry bag is packed with travel sizes that you have filled since your last trip. It doesn’t make sense to get to your destination and find you only have a day’s worth of shampoo or toothpaste.

Here’s a trick if you are so inclined: take underwear (none with holes-throw them out now!) that may be somewhat worn and instead of bringing them back home, throw them out after using. You could also do the same with socks. More space for souvenirs and less laundry!

All of these tips will make your costs less and give you more room for travel purchases (like more clothes).

7 Wardrobe Essentials for Summer (both genders)

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

It’s been a mighty hot summer so far. Has your wardrobe taken a beating? Is it still clean, pressed and ready? Are you ready for the work week, weekends, events, networking, picnics and other fun summer activities?

If you’re not quite sure, or you know for sure you’re not, here are 7 wardrobe essentials that will give you a great foundation for everything you need to do this hot, long summer.

1. Crisp white shirt/blouse-caveat: if your coloring dictates off white or cream, substitute the correct shade. There’s nothing like a crisp white shirt/blouse for all things professional. You can also dress it down and wear it with jeans on the weekend. Depending on the quality of garment you invest in, it may last for a few seasons or just one. Once it gets dingy or starts to lose its shape, get a new one.

2. Trench coat-instead of a garish raincoat, invest in a quality trench coat that you can wear on rainy days or chilly mornings. You will get a lot of wear out of it and it will protect your clothing underneath. Women, you can find trench coats in many different colors so pick one you can live with for the life of the coat.

3. Lightweight cashmere cardigan (neutral color)-think of all the ways you can wear this. You can dress it up with a dress shirt or blouse for the office. You can also wear it over a dress or cute top and skirt. Easy! Afterhours you can throw on a t-shirt underneath and rock it with some jeans and sneakers. In a pinch, you can even use it as a swimsuit cover up (just don’t get it wet).

4. Swimsuit-yes, this does strike horror in many hearts but if you’re going anywhere near a pool, lake or other body of water, you need one. Look for one that’s appropriate for many occasions (actual swimming, pool party, boating), which usually means skip the skimpy, barely there one that will probably end up embarrassing you with a malfunction. Men, I beg you, leave the speedo-like ones for underwear models. Make sure, no matter what your gender, you get one that works well with your figure type and coloring.

5. Light, neutral colored no iron pant-okay, there may be minimal ironing but it’s better than slaving away for hours during the hot days of summer. Light colors reflect light which means they’ll be cooler than dark colors. Idea: pair them with your white shirt/blouse and cardigan.

6. Scarf-yes, men wear scarves and look very handsome doing so. Your scarf will be different than women’s-no floral. Pick either a cotton solid or geometric print that is in colors you feel comfortable with. Hang it around your neck on cool days. Ladies, pick the type of fabric, color and pattern that moves you.

7. Well fitting bra-men, you can skip this one. Women, this is the most important item of the whole list. If you don’t have the correct foundation, your look, no matter what you’re wearing, will be off. A correctly fitting bra will make you look thinner, younger and maybe even taller. It lifts your chest and gives you more room between your chest and waist which makes you look thinner. There are many department stores that do it for no charge. Go do it today!

These essentials will get you through the rest of this hot, hot summer in style!

The Anatomy of a High Heel

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

Have you ever wondered the different parts of the object of torture you’re wearing on your precious feet? Here’s a basic lesson so you can make informed choices in the future.

Last-This is a model of the foot which establishes the arch which determines how your weight is distributed along the length of your foot. If your arch doesn’t conform to it, the shoe will always be uncomfortable. This is why it’s very important to try on both shoes and walk around.

Shank-This is the curve of the shoe under the arch. The shank absorbs your body weight through the ball of your foot and across the top of your foot. Quality is very important for comfort.

Quarter-This is the back of the shoe where it touches your foot. If it’s too low it won’t offer support. If it’s too high it will dig
into your ankle.

Vamp-This is how high or low a shoe is cut for the toes. The higher the vamp, the more support there is which also helps keep your foot in position so it doesn’t slide back or forth. Especially with high heels, it’s important to have a high vamp.

Toe box-This is obviously where your toes sit. It can be pointy, round or square. The one you pick should complement your height and body type. No matter how pointy the toe box is, you need to be able to wiggle your toes.

Heel height-This can be anywhere from 2” to 6” or higher. Even though the media (and retailers) show you that every woman is always in stilettos, that’s not true, nor is it healthy for your feet or back. About 2 ½” is a good maximum height you can probably do on a daily basis.

Heel width-Generally high heels are thinner although it is stylish now to wear a chunky platform heel which may be quite high. If you don’t like high heels but want the illusion of wearing them, wear kitten heels which are low but thinner and give you the look of wearing heels.

I hope this simple lesson gives you ammunition to make an informed, comfortable choice for your next shoes.

Fun & Different Laptop Bags

Friday, July 1st, 2011
A colleague recently asked for me to give her some options for briefcases and laptop bags that are fun and different; not the usual black or dark brown leather. I did have to search to find ones that had flair but I did end up finding some that will make heads turn in admiration as you enter the workplace, a meeting or a networking event. I found more laptop bags than strictly briefcases but of course you can use a laptop bag as both.
CoolComputerBags.com has nice options at all different price points (all images are from they’re website) such as the Amy Butler Harmony Laptop Bag for $179.99Amy Butler Harmony Laptop Bag
Caught Ya Lookin $119.99 can be monogrammed

Laurex laptop messenger $59.99

Mellow World Charmer Rolling Laptop $152.15

As you can see www.computerbags.com has great options for you. They also carry tablet covers, laptop sleeves and other bags of different kinds.

Another website I found with out of the ordinary options is www.ebags.com. They have an extensive selection of all different kinds of bags for everyone in your family. Of course I chose the fun ones for you (all images are from their website). The first one that caught my eye is this Giraffe Rolling (what’s better than rolling??) for $67.99.
Another bag that caught my eye was this pretty purple “Mimosa” rolling laptop bag for $124.80.
For those of you that want a little more refined look, here’s a bag that loosely resembles a Birken bag (never a bad thing) for $83.99. Much less costly than the real thing!
Here’s a hip backpack that you can put a laptop in and many other things. The price is an incredibly low $27.99.
I hope these give you some ideas on ways you can make a great impression with your bags.
All prices are as of this posting on July 1, 2011.

Men & Suits-Suck It Up

Friday, June 24th, 2011

I was watching The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, last night seriously throwing down in The Rundown in suits http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rundown . Yes, tailored, professional suits that fit him very well. I thought to myself, if Dwayne can do extremely physical scenes in suits, why do men complain and whine about wearing a suit either to work or other events? I asked my husband who was watching next to me and he shrugged his shoulders. He doesn’t understand it either. Every time we leave the house, unless we’re going hiking, he has on some kind of jacket, usually with dark wash jeans and a nice shirt.

Well yeah, you say, you probably make him wear that. Uh, no. My husband wears what he wants to. He understands that looking your best every time you leave home is crucial because you never know whom you may see or meet.

So suck it up! Quit complaining and whining like a child about having to wear a suit or suit jacket. Put on your big boy pants and get one (or more) that fit you properly. They will be as comfortable as a hoodie and you’ll look great, all of the time.

If you want a suit that fits you like a glove, invest in a custom made suit. Yes, it may cost more than a suit right out of the department store but you can get it in exactly the fabric and color you want. It will fit you so good, you’ll never want to take it off. A Tailored Suit is a great place to get one and Antonio, the owner, is a really nice guy.

http://www.atailoredsuit.com/

What’s cool is you order it right online. They have tons of awesome, very helpful information on their website about everything suits. You won’t regret it! No, I’m not getting paid to say this.

So no more excuses. Look and feel great-all of the time.

Confessions of a Former Personal Stylist

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Guest blog written by Dena A. Lorenzi, @FaithInFashion

As an Ann Taylor sales associate and personal stylist, I had the opportunity to dress newscasters, homemakers, lawyers, accountants and students. With experience, I saw patterns of style emerge. I learned how women approach dressing. I gleaned style nuggets from my fashionable customers. I listened intently to customers who seemed to abhor the whole “getting clothes” process. Here are some observations from the front lines of the fashion wars.

 1. Fashionistas know it’s important to be polite to sales associates. Savvy shoppers build and develop relationships with the sales staff. You don’t have to be BFF’s, but patience and courtesy go a long way. A courteous customer says “hello” upon entering the store. She is patient when a return or special order is being processed. After trying on her pieces, she returns her merchandise to the rolling rack. She knows, appreciates, and expresses gratitude for exceptional service.

 2. Fashionistas don’t default to wearing black. They know that black is much more aging than reds, whites and yellows. Color is kinder. They embrace vibrant color.

 3. Every women has at least one body issue, even the sub zeros. However, truly stylish darlings seem to have the most accurate body perception and know how to cleverly conceal figure flaws and reveal body attributes. Make sure your clothes are not too tight, too short, or reveal too much skin. Accept the fact that most women simply can’t buy a pair of pants off the rack and have them fit perfectly. Find a good tailor and get a custom look with alterations.

 4. The most stylish women never bought a head-to-toe look from Ann Taylor, even though we were taught to sell the customer five items, including jewelry and hosiery. Fashionistas use the in-store mannequins as a starting point. Mix the Ann Taylor top with the Nordstrom pants with the consignment store jewelry. The magic is in the mix, and so is the style. Seek pieces that are uniquely you.

 5. Personal style is an imprecise science, much more an art.  There are guidelines. However, the most fashionable women also have the most fun. They know that shopping can be joyous. Give yourself enough time to try a lot of clothes on. Experiment.  Try something you normally wouldn’t select. I recently tried on a romper. It looked hideous, but I had fun. It might have worked but until I tried it on, who can be sure? Keep an open mind.

 6. Most women wear the wrong undergarments. As Stacy and Clinton from TLC’s What Not To Wear remind us, get a professional bra fitting once a year! Explore different underwear options based on the outfit you are wearing. Ask for expert assistance. The proper undergarments make all the difference. You will look better, feel better about your look, and your clothes be what people remember, not your clumsy undergarments.

 7. Stay organized! Subscribe to the store’s email list to stay in the know regarding sales and shows. I created a separate email address exclusively for store emails. That way my regular inbox doesn’t get cluttered with sales notifications. Keep your receipts in a file by retailer. Make returns in a timely fashion. Take your time in the store to make a good decision; stores track chronic returners.

 8. Be prepared! If you are shopping for a special event outfit, bring the items you already have selected. Maybe it’s the shoes, or a nice blouse. Don’t imagine how it will look with the new pieces. See how it looks first-hand, in the dressing room. Bring a digital camera with you and snap a photo of yourself to give yourself visual feedback. Learn what you like and don’t like about your possible outfit, then tweak your look accordingly.

Most importantly, stylish women know that building a wardrobe takes time, patience, self-knowledge, boldness and commitment. Here’s to your style success!
